Horror Movies

Since it's that time of year when every single TV channel seems to think they are required to play as many terrible horror movies as possible, I'm going to come out and say it:

I despise horror movies.

Completely and utterly. I think they are awful, and I do not understand their appeal even the slightest bit.

Possibly because I have very vivid dreams and have for as long as I remember. Those scary story compilations that they had in elementary school, the ones where they're all over the internet in lists on terrifying illustrations? I read those. Possibly because all the other kids had and I didn't want to be the only one not to, even though the movie "Ernest Scared Stupid" (the first "scary" movie I'd ever seen) caused me to this day to sleep with my head under the blankets. My head gets cold now, I can't sleep with a cold head.

But it was a bad bad decision. I was losing sleep, waking up from nightmares that felt like memories, rigid with tension, convinced every noise the house made was the monster from whichever story featured in the latest nightmare.

The very, very few times friends have convinced me to watch anything scary have resulted in absolutely terrible dreams as an adult. If I'm flipping through the channels around this time of year and come across a scene from some slasher movie, I will dream about it.

It's pretty much the worst. I love Hallowe'en, I love dressing up, I love all of the non-horror movie shit that goes on with it. But I get so irritated that turning on the TV could leave me with terrible dreams.

I mean, I already lose enough sleep from sad ones, or weird ones that make me wake up thinking "wtf brain, where did that come from?" I don't need scary ones that not just wake me up, but keep me awake and paranoid every time the cat decides to eat.

  1. I admittedly quite enjoy scary movies, but most of them are quite bad and not very enjoyable. Some are nice though, usually the ones with less gore and more just tense moments.

Anyway, I can understand if someone doesn't really enjoy them.. and then this time of year must be awful for watching TV!
