MRAs are insane

I think I've mentioned I'm subbed to something called "Creepy PMs" on Reddit, because my goodness some people are creepy (and yes, there are nearly as many creepy women as men. Men are more scary-rapist-creepy and women are more I'm-going-to-boil-your-bunny creepy), and yesterday a woman posted this message she got on OkCupid:
Whoa, dude. She said two words.
First off: anyone else find the term "misandrist slut" to be so hilariously hypocritical? "You obviously hate men, you goddamn whore." Well, you being such a paragon of equality as proven by your use of the word "slut" to describe... a woman who wouldn't sleep with you, I guess? Wait a minute, isn't that the opposite of the definition of a slut? Well, we can't expect logic from someone who uses "misandrist" and "slut" in the same sentence.

Anyway... someone on the "Men's Rights" subreddit (a truly terrifying place. Even if you believe, like I do, that there is some unfairness towards men that should be addressed same as the unfairness towards women (i.e. prison rape being a joke as opposed to a woman being violently raped being an automatic torch-and-pitchfork time, when both are violent assaults), the men on that sub are almost entirely angry, hateful women-haters who advocate violence against women in every case a man feels hard done by and it makes me incredibly sad knowing there are men out there who hate me because I have a vagina and identify as a feminist, even though I actually advocate for true equality) linked to the comments thread of that post, and it blew. Up.

As of writing this, it had 560 comments. Normal is around 30-50, a lot is normally 130. Once, a post made it to /r/new, and that thread blew up to 300+.

The mods on Creepy PMs are usually really good at deleting comments that are abusive, but they leave the comments that attempt to make a point without being angry or rude or whatever, so most of those deleted comments were terrible people saying terrible things.

Some of the comments on there aren't considered to be breaking rules, but are still really terrible to read. Like the person arguing for some guy who said that incest can be a "sensual" expression of love being a father and a daughter who made me throw up in my mouth a little.

My Reddit experience got way better once I tailored it to myself by subbing to mostly women subreddits (pretty girls ugly face, makeup addiction, fancy follicles, ask women, 2xchromosomes, etc). Creepy PMs seem to have a good mix of non-crazy men and non-crazy women, so I like that one to give me back a little faith in humanity that the default subreddits stole from me.

But it's still like this, in a nutshell:
100% accurate.

  1. I don't read Reddit myself, not sure if I should.. There's probably a lot of really interesting stuff there, but also a lot of very, very disturbing things.

That message exchange on the dating site is just.. Wow. I mean, yeah, there are things that are wrong for men too, but I don't think it can be compared to what happens to women. And, what I feel most "men's rights" guys or anti-feminists don't get is that most feminists are actually pro-equal rights. We don't want female domination, or women to have it better than men. We want the same things.

Most of the feminist blogs I read here in Sweden all agree that men do get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to divorce and children. At the same time, women usually end up having to give up their careers and do most of the work in the house and with the children (not always of course, but in most cases women still do most of the house work, and deal with kids).

Men are the group most violence are done to. That's for sure. But maybe it's time for people to start looking at what we teach our children? Already from a very young age we teach the boys that it's okay to be boisterous and run around cause "it's just what boys do". While if a girl does the same thing, she's often told off. We give the boys one type of toys and girls another type. And yet people refuse to see any kind of connection to how we act as adults.

    But I think I'm digressing... :)

    1. Reddit can be good, but it can also be incredibly awful. Like the Anita Sarkeesian debacle. She was the woman who started a kickstarter to do a series on tropes vs women in video games, and the gaming community on Reddit was HORRIBLE every time she was mentioned. Like, calling her a slut, and how she was a stupid ignorant woman who shouldn't be playing video games anyway, and how everyone who supported her kickstarter was a stupid feminazi who lost their money because lol she ran away with it.

(And then she released her first video the other day, and MAN I wish I could see the faces of those neckbeards now.)

But how we raise our boys definitely has an effect on how they are as men. Neither of my brothers would dream of being anything like those men. They don't hate women, though.

    2. I actually really enjoyed her video. Then I viewed some of the other videos made as responses, and they were just so incredibly frustrating.

Sure, one of them made an okay point in that he didn't critisise the video itself - but the fact that she doesn't allow for comments, and showed off some of the comments he gets from her fans. Not nice comments. But I don't quite think it can compare to the kind of comments women who voice their opinions get.

You don't usually see a man getting comments about how they wish he'd be raped etc. So if people call him stupid, I don't really think it compares. That said, I do agree that some people go way overboard with their commenting.

Another thing the guy in the re: video said was that feminists believe in a stronger, better gender (ie. women). Which I just consider completely wrong. There may be some women like that, but most feminists believe in equality. From what I've seen so far Anita Sarkeesian believes in equality and not that women should suddenly dominate.

I don't think I will ever understand the men who whine about how everything's equal and women want too much, and omg it's just a game/movie/whatever. But the picture is always just a little bit bigger than they want to see.

Hmm.. am I going off on a tangent again? Been sick for over a week, my mind is somewhat muddled *lol* I hope I make any semblance of sense!

    3. Death threats, rape threats, etc (any threat of physical violence) are not the same as being called stupid, at all! They're scary, not hurtful. A lot of guys don't understand that because they don't feel in danger of those things.
