Artists work hard. And they often don't make that much money. So the least that people who are enjoying their art for free can do it provide the artist with credit.
So it is just a huge jerk thing to do to steal someone's art and put it somewhere else without giving them credit for it. How hard is it to not remove a watermark with the artist's website? Even if you then host it on one of the many sites that people post things on ("damnlol" seems to be one site someone on my feed uses a lot, "imgfave" is another), at least people can look and say, "That artist amuses me, let's see if their other stuff amuses me, too!"
No, instead these jerks have to steal it, not credit it, and still get nothing from it. They are depriving the artist of potential ad or merchandise revenue for absolutely no benefit to themselves.
I have posted some of the things I've drawn on the internet, because I don't have a website where I am attempting to earn revenue. So I don't really care that much if someone steals my art and isn't making a profit (although I would be PISSED to find someone profiting from it).
But most online artists who are actually talented sell prints, or have webcomics they make ad revenue from, or merchandise they sell. And those people deserve that small, simple courtesy of people not being jerk-offs and ripping off their art.
And it is definitely worse when someone else is profiting off that person's art. It is shady, and immoral, and just super not nice.
I always try to credit the artist when I see someone linking an uncredited picture, whether it's just a panel from a webcomic or the entire comic with the website removed. Because I hate it when people do that.
I agree. I try to credit art where I can if I use it, but I may have failed on occasion (if you notice one, please tell by the way!)
ReplyDeleteInternet is a great thing where you can find a lot of things, but it can also be a tricky place to navigate. It's one of my worries about putting my stories up online. What if someone steals them?
Oh, I definitely share the source when I know it, for sure. :)
DeleteAnd people definitely steal words, too. Art of any sort, writing, drawings, music... :(
