Seriously, this (probably the original, and not the one that says "Chuck Missler takes the misunderstanding of evolution to a whole new level" in the video text) was linked by someone on Facebook a year or two back, with the (100% serious) caption of, "This is why I can never take evolution seriously."
It just shows such a vast ignorance to the theory behind evolution and the origin of life that my mind starts to stutter with angry words that make no real sense when put together.
You can Google "origin of life," and the first result will be the Wikipedia page on abiogenesis. (Well, it will be if you're me, but I understand Google tailors results, so if you're a Christian, it quite possible will come up with a link to a bible or something. So maybe you should Google "scientific origin of life" if you spend a lot of time on Christian websites.)
And then read it. Read the HELL out of it, like it's on a test. It's not that long, it's Wikipedia.
But basically what it comes down to is that the reason new life never has and never will spontaneously be created in your peanut butter is because the conditions in your jar of peanut butter are nowhere near the conditions that are believed to have existed (based on volcanic evidence) at the time that it happened.
And I just don't understand where someone could have gone to school where that wasn't taught. I learned that in freaking elementary school, where we all thought "primordial soup" meant it was filled with vegetables. My Catholic school neighbours learned about evolution in their Catholic school.
I just think that the biggest reason people disbelieve evolution is flat-out ignorance. All the arguments I've ever seen against it have completely misunderstood all of the basic elements of it. I mean, in elementary school again, we had that chart that showed all the branches of evolution, starting with a single ancestor. Of course, it was super basic at that point, unlike the one we used in high school biology and then the even-more complicated versions we used in university, but it made it super obvious that we did not "come from monkeys (SO WHY ARE THERE STILL MONKEYS)," as you constantly hear Creationists shout.
So it just confuses the hell out of me when people who know absolutely nothing about what they're arguing against try to argue against it. Isn't the entire point of debate learning about the other side of the argument to better refute its claims? I mean, how can you claim something is wrong when you know nothing about it beyond hearsay from crazy, mouth-frothing televangelists?
You can't! You just make me make my WTF face when I see you arguing against things that aren't true. Well, no, of course we didn't come from monkeys, the same way I didn't come from my cousins, how does that make any sense to you, you crazy person?
I will end with this, which best explains my feelings towards Christians, who are mostly nice people with completely insane ideas and often an unwillingness to educate themselves, possibly from a fear of losing the faith they are so invested in (which I suppose I can understand):
